Firm: Williams & Connolly
Issue Area: Workers’ Rights & Union Busting
Williams & Connolly represented E.M.D. Sales, a Maryland food distributor, in a Supreme Court fight to avoid paying overtime to three of its sales representatives. The firm asked the Court to make it easier for employers to deny overtime by lowering the standard of proof an employer must meet to show that a worker is exempt.
In asking the Supreme Court to take the case, Williams & Connolly described disputes over workers' unpaid minimum wage and overtime as "classic civil fights about the 'mere loss of money.'"
